Hyfforddiant Parys Training

Hyfforddiant Parys Training was formed as the trading arm of the Amlwch Regeneration Partnership. The aim of the company is to re-vitalise the skills base within the local economy through an innovative and committed programme that will reach out to the excluded and disaffected young people who reside in Amlwch and the surrounding area.

At present, Hyfforddiant Parys Training is responsible for / plays an important role in the delivery of two ESF funded projects (Community Stepladder Training and Amlwch Skills centre 16+), and another project in conjunction with the Local Education Authority. There is the potential to develop a commercial aspect of the company in addition to these projects. This commercial aspect would secure the future sustainability of the Training Centre for years to come.

The Centre is home to the region’s DigiLab (a Canllaw- Credu project), which links in with the Island’s Youth Service. The ICT facility is available to the entire community so that all can reap the benefits of e-commerce. The Centre is home to Amlwch’s Cyber Café, which is geared towards the 16-24 age groups.

Project Information

Community Training (Currently Stepladder Community Training)

Providing a programme of training that tackles social exclusion amongst the population of Amlwch and the north of Anglesey, the project offers basic training that equips local people with the skills and knowledge that will allow them to break the dependency culture and as a result lead to the creation of sustainable communities in the area.

The project provides free skills training for people who fit a set criterion - unemployed, in low paid-low skilled employment and volunteers who are active in their community. It is paramount to the regeneration and development of Amlwch and its surrounding area, that the provision of free training be utilised to engage the disadvantaged groups of the communities into gaining skills for the workplace / community.

To date, over 500 people have benefited from the Stepladder Project, with a number of them completing more than one of the courses on offer. The training opportunities offered by Stepladder range from food hygiene and first aid to IT (both basic skills and ECDL) and even chainsaw and mechanical strimming.

Through the Stepladder Community Training Project, the training centre has benefited from having an IT system for the visually impaired with specialist software for their use; these classes are run on a weekly basis with a representative from the RNIB.

ESF Funding for this project in its current format is due to end in September 2007.

Commercial Training

In addition to facilitating the ESF projects, Hyfforddiant Parys Training also offers training in various fields on a commercial basis, and both, community groups and organisations can pay for the use of the IT suite / teaching room(s).

Both Working Links and the Welsh Language Board are located in the Training Centre, and work closely to provide the best opportunities possible for the local community, organisations and businesses.

At present Hyfforddiant Parys Training concentrates on the ESF projects, without fully exploiting its commercial potential.

Skills 16+

“Engage, employ and provide pre-preparatory vocational training for young people at risk of disaffection, those with low motivation and for whom existing training and employment opportunities are not appropriate”

The need for the Amlwch Skills Centre is apparent from statistics that show that whilst 42% of year 11 students at the secondary school in Amlwch move on to 6th form ‘A’ level studies and a further 55% progress to further education or to some form of training based employment as many as 3% are left with no meaningful employment or training opportunities.

The programme’s aim is to offer individuals aged 16-24 within the regions of Amlwch with an alternative to what they are accustomed to; the programme has objectives of getting those involved better equipped to tackle mainstream training programmes and face the world of work with greater awareness.

Addressing issues such as motivation, personal problems, character and relationship building, literacy and numeracy skills, the project provides an opportunity for the individuals who left education early to have a second chance. As the programme is a ‘roll on roll off’ scheme, it is hoped that a number of the beneficiaries will move onto mainstream training at different stages of the programme.

Young people are recruited via the local Job Centre, the New Deal Officer, Skills Centre Staff and by distributing posters and flyers in the area.

Those following the training programme have already experienced an insight into field such as food hygiene, digital photography, first aid and car maintenance with experienced mentors in those fields; and have also had the opportunity to take part in fun confidence and team building activities and adventure days; as well as the completion of more tedious tasks such as CV writing, applying for job vacancies and interview techniques – complete with mock interviews.

ESF Funding for this project in its current format is due to end in June 2008 (WEFO approval pending).

Education – Secondary School

Hyfforddiant Parys Training has been involved with pupils from year 10 (Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones School) since September 2004. During this period, pupils have experienced disciplines and responsibilities that they’re likely to encounter once out in the world of work.

Pupils attend the training centre on a one day a week basis, each week linked, where possible, to an educational / vocational area, the sessions  also address social skills. Individuals within the group have differing educational needs, from literacy and numeracy shortfalls to building confidence and self esteem. The Centre, through its partners, helps in the development of these shortfalls. It is hoped that the pupils will gain sufficient self-belief so that they can move forward in their education with a more positive - productive attitude.

Pupils amass a number of certificates during the educational year and it is felt that these experiences and achievements will help them in their chosen vocational / educational careers. Following the success of the first group of pupils, Hyfforddiant Parys Training now work alongside the school with a group of year 10 and a group of year 11 pupils, allowing pupils to follow the training programme over two years.

In addition to the school pupils, another group of 13-16 year old individuals attend the training centre on a weekly basis in conjunction with the local authority’s education department. These individuals are, for one reason or another excluded from secondary school education.

These programmes have been recognised by the School and the local authority and now receives funding directly from the Isle of Anglesey County Council towards it's running costs.
